Medical Background
How is it possible that you may not need an abortion? It turns out that a large fraction of all pregnancies, about 1 in 4, will end naturally without any intervention. "Miscarriage" is the common term used to describe a natural end to a pregnancy (of less than 20 weeks). The medical term is "spontaneous abortion". Enlightened Woman exists to educate the woman facing an unplanned pregnancy that an abortion may not be needed.

The chance of miscarrying is believed to range between approximately 15% and 50% (see WebMD, New York Times, and eMedicine articles), depending on a variety of factors including the woman's age.

It is generally believed that approximately half of all miscarriages occur due to chromosomal abnormalities. Other causes include gene or hormonal defects and uterine abnormalities, among others.
